Bryant Biomass is a promising feedstock for the next generation drop-in liquid fuels and renewable chemicals, and hence the development of economically viable technologies for the production of commodity and specialty chemicals from sustainable biomass have received significant attention in recent years. Although biomass transformation into drop-in biofuels involves multiple processing steps in which Catalysts lower the activation energy barrier for a reaction without changing the equilibrium constant. In this lecture, catalysts of different types are introduced, including Nature’s catalysts, enzymes. We also hear from Chemist Jingnan Lu about why knowledge of kinetics is important for the development of biofuels. Efficient production and sequential utilization of furan derivatives will provide a promising approach towards achieving renewable liquid biofuels from biomass.

During the 1990s the share of biofuels in district heating increased rapidly and now accounts for 44% [10].
